Guided Reading

Guided reading is the heart
of the reading programme.
It gives a teacher
and a group of students
the opportunity to talk,
read and think
their way purposefully
through a particular text.

Benefits

It provides for all the range
of needs in a class.

It can be used in any
essential learning
 area of the curriculum.

It can be used at all levels
of the school.

Guided reading is above all
an instructional approach.
It is the bridge to independence.

Aim

To help children learn to use
independent reading
strategies succesfully.

This based on the concept
that reading is an active process
of constructing meaning from a text.

During the Guided Reading Sessions
the teacher can provide
personalized instruction
 and give immediate feedback.

Benefits

A more focused teaching session;
An opportunity to teach and extend
children of similar ability;
An opportunity to learn from each other,
teacher and children alike.
